Will the real Broncos quarterback please stand up?

As we inch closer to the Super Bowl of the preseason, otherwise simply known as week three of exhibition football, we are still waiting for the Broncos to name a starting quarterback. This week’s theory has us all thinking Mark Sanchez has gone from the starter on September 8 to being cut before the regular season opener.

I recently wrote about the exact moment I gave up on Sanchez. It happened after he was asked if he wanted to play more in the second preseason game. His response — “Doesn’t matter to me” — really rubbed me the wrong way. I don’t know why, but I get angry when I think about it.

Now, I’m beginning to flip again. It has nothing to do with something Trevor Siemian said. In fact, it has everything to do with what he’s not saying.

The starter will be determined by play on the field, as it should be, but where is the self-confidence, the swagger? Not every quarterback is going to be a star on and off the field, but at least let us know you believe in yourself so that it’s easier for us to believe in you.

There is a fine line between cocky and confident — see Colin Kaepernick kissing his stupid bicep a couple years ago — but I want my quarterback to walk that fine line. Mark Sanchez and Trevor Siemian seem to be each other’s biggest fan, and to be honest, it bugs me.

The defense oozes confidence, and they are so fun to watch. They compete with one another, not wanting to be outdone by their own teammate, while the opponent simply plays a pawn in their own game.

The two guys competing to be the starting quarterbacks on the defending Super Bowl champions, on the other hand, say, “It doesn’t matter to me,” when asked about playing time.

What would Aqib Talib say if he was asked if he wanted to play more than Bradley Roby? His answer would have to be edited for print. Now, too much Talib is a bad thing — see his offseason activities — but that self-confidence goes a long way on the field.

Save the “they’ll let their play on the field do the talking” tweets; I’ll believe that when I see it.

Saturday’s game against the Rams should give us the answers we’re looking for, Trevor Siemian, in my opinion, has to be ready for a big night on September 8.
