It was a magical Colorado night in the superpipe as David Wise, the reigning Olympic gold medalist in ski superpipe from 2014, threw down a run that had never been seen in Aspen prior to the 2018 games. Wise stomped a third run that consisted of four double-corks — each one of them done in a different direction — and that was enough to earn him the top spot on the podium.
Wise came into the X Games a bit nicked up from practice the previous day, but was able to clock in and get the job done.
Alex Ferreira and Torin Yater-Wallace earned the silver and bronze to make it a clean sweep for the United States. This is the second time Ferreira has won the silver and ties the highest finish of his X Games career. Yater-Wallace has found his way to the podium multiple times and will add this bronze medal to his collection.
The three of them will be heading to the 2018 Olympics, as Wise will look to defend his gold medal from the 2014 games. The fourth member of the men’s superpipe ski team, Aaron Blunck, came in eighth place and was unable to defend his 2017 gold medal in the superpipe.
This is a promising tune-up for the Americans as they look to carry this momentum into the 2018 Olympic games next month and compete against the best in the world on the biggest stage.
