If you’re a regular reader here at Mile High Sports, you knew that Martin Truex Jr. of the Denver-based Furniture Row Racing Team sat in the final qualifying position for the final round in the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup heading into Sunday’s race in Phoenix. Well folks, behold the fruits of our labor (and I guess Truex had something to do with it too).

In a race shortened by 93 laps due to rain, Truex finished in 14th place to seal up the fourth and final title-eligible spot in next weekend’s Championship 4 round, the race that will determine the 2015 NASCAR Sprint Cup Champion.

The Ford Ecoboost 400 will take place at Homestead-Miami Speedway, an environment in which Truex feels he can excel.

In eight races at Homestead-Miami Speedway, Truex has two top-5 finishes, and his average finish there is 9.9. According to nascar.com, he has the best driver rating at the track among the four championship contenders with a 106.6.

“Homestead’s a really good racetrack for me, and that’s our kind of racetrack with this team,” Truex told reporters after the race Sunday.

Truex’s mere ascension to the finals is incredible considering the circumstances. Furniture Row Racing is a single-car outfit and breaks the traditional mold of title-contending teams. The last time a single-car team won a Cup Series Championship was in 1992, and only three times since the year 2000 has a driver of a the same situation placed 15th or better in the point standings at the end of the year. A championship would be mind-boggling.

While the title aspirations of Denver’s usual suspects are in flux, one team will actually be competing for a championship this Sunday. Instead of rooting for the orange and blue or the boys in baby blue, local fans should be cheering for the red-and-black blur.

Those fans cheering for Truex won’t be alone. Dale Earnhardt Jr. said earlier last week that (even though he’s Jeff Gordon’s teammate), he’s pulling for Truex.
