The Denver Broncos have had an ongoing quarterback controversy brewing, with three candidates in the mix: Paxton Lynch, Trevor Siemian and Mark Sanchez.
Former Denver Post columnist Woody Paige joined Gil Whiteley on Mile High Sports radio AM 1340 | FM 104.7 to give his take on the ongoing discussion, and Paige is going with Sanchez.
“Mark Sanchez is going to start the season,” Paige said. “Whatever [Gary] Kubiak and [John] Elway say, they’re more like Dan Reaves than they want to admit. They’re conservative.”
Sanchez was acquired in March from Philadelphia in a trade that was considered to be one of the first pieces of the quarterback puzzle being put into place.
What Paige mentions, though, is that Kubiak and Elway are staying conservative in their decision for who starts under center. Go with the guy who’s played the most, not the promising rookie.
Lynch has yet to see any time in an NFL game and Siemian barely has any experience. Meanwhile, Sanchez has spent six years as an NFL quarterback and has the experience the other two candidates severely lack.
If Sanchez starts, though, Paige warns that the Broncos are crossing their fingers for a cleaner performance than what the veteran quarterback has displayed in past years.
“They’re going to start Mark Sanchez,” Paige said,” “[and] hope he doesn’t make mistakes – you talked about his quarterback rating. The more concerning issue is he was an interception machine when he was a starter.”
The issue with Sanchez lies with his efficiency in throwing the football. Sanchez has averaged over one pick per game in five of his six seasons. His total quarterback rating has never exceeded 60 and twice has he thrown more interceptions than touchdowns.
Still, Paige believes the former USC Trojan will get the nod when the Broncos open the season on September 8 against Carolina.
