It’s been a long time since the Denver Broncos could leave the weekend with a loss and not end up pointing the finger at the offense, but that’s what’s happening today after Trevor Siemian did everything in his power to give the team a chance to win.
His 17 fourth quarter and overtime points, though, weren’t enough to get the job done.
Instead, the Broncos were thwarted by a barrage of special teams errors and two game-tying drives from the Kansas City offense.
After over 12 months of carrying this franchise towards success, the defense stepped up and took accountability for Sunday night’s brutal loss.
Von Miller on losing a dramatic game
“We’ve been on the other side of these wins 50-million times. It’s the National Football League and we’ve gotten the better end of these games and that was just one that we did not complete, one that we did not get. We did everything that we possibly could to lose the game. We did everything that we possibly could in every phase of the football game and guess what, we lost.”
Miller on defensive penalties
“[When] you have 94 yards of penalty yards, that’s not a good thing. The penalties, they’re going to happen. It’s just unfortunate that all of them were on the last drive. We have to do a better job with that. We always do a good job with that, but it was just a tough patch right there. ‘D-Ware’ [OLB DeMarcus Ware] got an offsides and I got and offsides. We’ll be better.”
Chris Harris on not closing out the game
“That was on us, on the defense. We’ve got to be able to finish that game. That’s what they pay us to do. They pay us to finish those games and close it out. We didn’t do it today.”
Harris on not executing
“We beat ourselves. We didn’t execute the calls. We had perfect calls and we didn’t execute them; we didn’t run the defense right. We came offsides about four times and we had some PI’s.”
Brandon Marshall on letting the game slip away
“We should have one that game, hands down. There was no way we should have lost that game. We lost it and now we’re sitting here sick.”
Shane Ray on losing a game like this
“It’s tough playing with the effort that we played with and still losing. I think when we look at the last drive, we’ll hold ourselves accountable for that. That’s on the defense. It’s a tough feeling. I haven’t been a part of too many games like this, and it’s a tough thing to deal with, playing that well and losing. We’ve still got our heads up and we’re going to get back to the drawing board.”
Ray on giving up game-tying and game-winning drives
“This sport is all about the team. We didn’t win in all three phases. We didn’t win on defense. It looks like we won on defense, but that last drive was us. We don’t have anyone else to blame but ourselves, so we’ve just got to get back to work.”
