The moment the Colorado Buffaloes hired Deion Sanders, also known as Coach Prime, to be the head coach of their program, they became one of the nation’s preeminent landing spots for defensive backs and wide receivers.
Travis Hunter, the highest-rated cornerback recruit in the history of 247Sports’ composite rankings, followed Coach Prime to Colorado via the transfer portal, and Cormani McClain, another one of the 10-highest-rated cornerback recruits ever, just signed with the Buffaloes last week as the third-highest-rated recruit in program history.
It hasn’t just been a few grand slams either. His recruiting efforts have produced tremendous results, in measures of both quality and quantity.
Jimmy Horn Jr. (4-Star), a speedy transfer receiver from South Florida; Myles Slusher (3-Star), a fluid athlete with prototypical traits from Arkansas; and Kyndrich Breedlove (3-Star), a talented transfer cornerback from Ole Miss are others that sprinkle Coach Prime’s stellar transfer haul at the glamor positions.
The freshman class features two 4-Star wide receivers and six total 3-Star talents at those positions (26 combined ‘stars’).
Plus, that mythos is only continuing to build around Coach Prime’s Buffaloes.
Phillip Bell (4-Star, 0.983 composite score, 2025’s No. 9 WR & No. 34 overall) and Therman ‘Boogie’ Williams (Unrated 2026 CB) both gushed about what Coach Prime is building with the Colorado Buffaloes, following recent visits to the program, via 247Sports’ Adam Munstertieger and Brandon Huffman.
“Just being able to meet Coach Prime was surreal,” Williams said, via Munsterteiger. “He’s one of the baddest football players of all time. I really try to model my game after him. I also enjoyed seeing the campus and seeing how the program is run. Everything was amazing out there, from the coaches to the weight room to even the area where the players meet. It was all just amazing”
It seems the Colorado Buffaloes also might have the inside track on Williams, as they were one of the first major programs to offer him.
“The offers I have right now, I am very thankful and blessed for them,” Williams shared. “My first one was actually Colorado so that is one of the biggest schools on my radar right now. As time goes by, hopefully I get more Power 5 schools. Colorado will definitely always be up at the top.”
Bell echoed many of those sentiments in his conversation with Brandon Huffman
“My visit to Colorado was nice, I like Colorado,” Bell told Huffman. “Coach Deion is straight up, I like that about him. Colorado is actually very nice, I didn’t expect it to be that nice. And the first time, Deion Sanders walks into the room, its crazy because its Deion Sanders, its Prime Time. I had a good conversation with him and my mom and step-dad and I liked it a lot.”
The ‘Coach Prime effect’ can also be seen with recruits that haven’t visited Colorado yet, like Kyan McDonald (3-Star, 0.888 composite score, 2024’s No. 32 S & No. 378 overall), who seemed to be primarily interested in the Buffaloes as a result of their recent head coach hire.
“There is definitely an attraction with Colorado with Deion as a DB, especially being a DB,” McDonald said via Huffman. “Every DB wants to play for Deion because he did it the best.”
Coach Prime continues to be the gift that keeps on giving.
