Following the Supreme Court’s ruling that lifted the effective ban on sports gambling in America, Yahoo Sports’ Brad Evans — a longtime proponent of allowing sports betting nationwide — was elated.
“I’m as giddy as I was 24 hours ago, upon hearing the breaking news,” Evans told Nate Lundy, Shawn Drotar and T.J. Carpenter on Mile High Sports AM 1340 | FM 104.7. “I think the value to this is living within it’s potential. I believe unless Congress intervenes, it’s going to go state-by-state.”
Evans discussed the impact that sports gambling could have in Colorado.
“I think you’re going to see within a couple of years, likely up in Blackhawk and Central City, some form of sports gambling right here in the Centennial State.”
Once legalized in specific states, the adjustment period may take a while, considering the potentially enormous economic impact sports gambling will have.
“There’s going to be a lot continuous arguments back-and-forth,” said Evans. “Between certain bodies, certain enemies that are pro-gambling, some that are anti-gambling. There’s going to be people there waving the ‘integrity’ flag, much like the leagues. There’s going to be people concerned about the safety of the umpires and referees if a wager goes sideways for somebody.”
It may take a while for the issues of sports gambling to get worked out.
“There are a lot of discussion points here that need to be flushed out,” said Evans. “I think that there’s going to be a lot of debates. Hopefully, a lot of proactive and wholesome arguments, and ultimately there’s going to be a compromise that will be reached.”
Technology will play a big factor in sports gambling.
“Ultimately the grand prize in all of this is being able to bet online, or through your mobile device,” said Evans. “That will be coming on a state-by-state basis, probably within the next couple of years.”
