As of June 1 on Monday, the Denver Broncos released Dre Greenlaw.
Because of that post-June 1 designation, the Broncos were able to spread the dead cap over both 2026 and 2027.
That leaves Denver with $25.66M in cap space per Over the Cap.
Denver Broncos release Dre Greenlaw, cap space swells to $25.66M
Dre Greenlaw, we hardly knew ye.
Greenlaw was supposed to be the answer to the middle of the Denver defense when it came to covering tight ends and running backs out of the backfield.
Instead, he was oft-injured, just like his last year with the 49ers and didn’t make a huge impact on the Broncos defense.
In fact, Greenlaw’s time with Denver may be best remembered by his suspension for yelling at a referee after the Broncos won on a last-second kick.
The veteran linebacker was part of a four-headed free agency in 2025 where the Broncos brought in proven players at four different positions. They were Greenlaw and former Niners teammate Talanoa Hufanga, tight end Evan Engram and running back J.K. Dobbins.
Unfortunately for the team, only two of them had great years in 2025—Hufanga and Dobbins—while the other two underperformed.
Greenlaw played in only eight games last year, or less than half of the team’s total. And soon after the season ended the Broncos decided they’d move on from him.
He was given a post-June 1 designation, which again lets the Broncos spread his dead cap numbers of $2.167M and $2.167M over the next two years.
Denver Broncos now have $25.66M in cap space; will they use any of it?
Having more cap space for the Broncos is a great thing. But the question is: Will they use any of it?
Last year, Dobbins was brought in after June 1, where we currently stand today. In fact, he was signed on June 10, 2025.
So, Denver’s GM George Paton has a recent history of signing free agents this late into the offseason.
But, will Denver use their newly swelled cap space to add a player, or will they roll it over into 2027?
This offseason, the Broncos basically only re-signed guys who were already on the roster in 2025. Adam Trautman, Nate Adkins, Ja’Quan McMillian, Lucas Krull, Jaleel McLaughlin, and a few more.
That’s to say, they didn’t sign any free agents who weren’t in-house players.
The one big move they made was the trade for Jaylen Waddle, which was massive.
All that being said, it seems more likely they’d be willing to sign a guy if the right one presents himself and if the money makes sense.
One name that keeps popping up around Broncos Country is Von Miller.
Miller had 9.5 sacks last year as a backup in Washington. If he could provide around that many sacks and the accompanying pressures, while also working o teach Nik Bonitto and Jonathon Cooper, it seems like a definite win-win.
Although they bolstered the interior defensive line a bit in the draft with Tyler Onyedim as their top pick, Denver could still decide to add players to that position. DaQuan Jones is a somewhat interesting option, as an experienced veteran.
Or, maybe the Broncos want to beef up the receiver room even further. Deebo Samuel and Curtis Samuel are still available, among many other role playing receivers that could help Denver go further in the playoffs this year.
