The Avalanche front office will look a bit different next season, yet also quite familiar.

After 11 seasons with Colorado, Chris MacFarland has moved to the Nashville Predators as president of hockey operations and general manager.

“We would like to thank Chris for all he did for the Avalanche organization. Chris was instrumental in our success over the last decade and a key part of our 2022 Stanley Cup championship. This was an opportunity for him to take on a bigger role with the Predators while being closer to his family. We wish him and his family all the best in Nashville,” Kroenke Sports & Entertainment Vice Chairman Josh Kroenke said in a statement.

For the “foreseeable future,” Joe Sakic will be the team’s GM, once again, the statement said. Sakic, 56, served as executive vice president/GM from 2013 to 2022. He is credited with building the team that won the 2022 Stanley Cup, earning him the Jim Gregory General Manager of the Year Award.

MacFarland and Sakic built the current roster that reached the Western Conference Finals, but MacFarland will solely handle that responsibility in Nashville.

The duo brought Martin Necas and Brock Nelson to the Avs, as well as getting Nazem Kadri back, just to name a few big moves in the past two seasons.

What’s next for the Avs with Sakic resuming GM position?

There was much speculation around the Avs’ front office and coaching staff during and after the team’s postseason run. But per Elliotte Friedman, head coach Jared Bednar will stay put.

Future changes are still uncertain, but a clearer outlook may emerge after a press conference with Sakic, expected next week.
