Welcome back to Avalanche hockey. The regular season is officially underway, and the boys in burgundy and blue have already set an aggressive tone for the year. Colorado opened their schedule with an eight-goal performance, putting the rest of the league on notice right out of the gate. Now, they prepare to face a familiar Central Division rival in the St. Louis Blues.

Every game carries weight in this division. For the Avalanche, scoring four power-play goals in your first game is certainly a great story, but can they sustain that level of offensive pressure while simultaneously tightening up their own end of the rink? We are about to find out, as the Avalanche look to build on their strong start in this early-season matchup.

Betting Odds

  • Moneyline: Colorado Avalanche -301, St. Louis Blues +240
  • Puckline: Colorado Avalanche -1.5 (-120)
  • Total (Over/Under): 6.5 (Over +115 / Under -139)

The Preview

Yes, the offense looks sharp. Four power-play goals? Check.

Against St. Louis, Colorado cannot simply rely on outscoring its own mistakes. The process at the faceoff dot in the opener was a concern; they’ll want to win more than 36 percent of draws (21 for 58) to avoid having to chase the play. Against a Blues team that prefers to dictate possession and slow the game down, constantly starting shifts without the puck runs the risk of keeping them in the game. Combine that faceoff deficit with 12 giveaways and a defensive effort that allowed four goals on 31 shots – equating to an .871 save percentage – and it becomes clear the Avalanche have a bit of early-season tidying up to do in their own zone. Messy? Maybe… but it’s fixable.

The injury report also complicates the bottom six. Missing a reliable, high-motor forward like Logan O’Connor to a lower-body injury leaves a noticeable gap in Colorado’s checking line and penalty kill. Forward Zachary L’Heureux also remains on the shelf. Colorado will need their depth players to step up and absorb those missing minutes. In the opener, the Avs added Noah Juulsen to the mix, going with seven blueliners against the Kings.

The Blues are dealing with notable injuries on the back end, with defensemen Tyler Tucker (knee) and Logan Mailloux (hand) both ruled out. That presents an obvious advantage for Colorado. When evaluating the best prediction markets for this game, targeting a depleted defensive corps with Colorado’s top-end speed is a logical angle.

The blueprint for tonight is straightforward. Attack the blue line. Draw penalties. Convert. If Colorado manages the puck responsibly, cuts down on the unforced errors, and reduces the high-danger shots in their own defensive zone, they can expose a vulnerable (to the Avs, at least) Blues roster.

The Pick

Laying -301 on the moneyline offers virtually zero return on investment, so if we are going to back Colorado here, we have to look toward the spread. While laying some juice on a divisional puckline always comes with a bit of inherent risk, the math favors the Avalanche in this spot.

The faceoff struggles and defensive zone turnovers are fixable with standard coaching adjustments. The sheer offensive talent Colorado possesses, however, is not something St. Louis can easily scheme against, especially with key defensemen missing from their rotation. The Avalanche should consistently generate high-danger chances against this banged-up unit. As long as Colorado plays a slightly cleaner, more responsible game in front of their own net, their power play and even-strength speed will create the separation needed to cover the number. The offense is simply clicking too well to ignore right now.
