ESPN “30 for 30” documentary series covers the greatest and most-controversial stories in sports history. Colorado has already earned one, “The Gospel According to Mac,” where ESPN detailed the rise of coach Bill McCartney’s national champion Colorado Buffalo team, but what else should the “30 for 30” producers be considering?
Notaro and Big Dee brought in Broncos reporter Andrew Mason to throw around some ideas.
Mason threw out the idea of Colorado State’s 1994 upset victory over the No. 6-ranked University of Arizona Wildcats. The CSU Rams were not a powerhouse football school by any means but were able to beat the famous “desert swarm” defense which included big names like Teddy Bruschi and Rod Waldrop.
“The 1994 CSU Rams, I’ll do that. I’ll narrate that one,” said Notaro, who is a CSU alum.
But the more serious story that was talked about was the shooting of former Denver Broncos cornerback Darrent Williams. On New Years Day 2007, Williams was at a night club and was fatally shot getting into his Hummer limousine. Other Broncos were at the club, including then rookie Brandon Marshall.
“We are all familiar with that, obviously, but nationally I think it’s been forgotten,” Mason said. “The best ’30 for 30’s’ tend to be mostly obscure, but also dark.”
