The Cisco College (TX) Wranglers (48-14, 2-0 JUCO) rode their horses into their second game of the JUCO World Series, almost as if they were riding into a cattle drive. Cisco put up 13 runs in their first game, riding high on their offense. However, the Yavapai Community College (AZ) Roughriders (45-20, 1-1 JUCO) and their own hot offense stood in their way – almost as if the Roughriders were bulls standing in front of the cowboys on that cattle drive.
The drive got off with a bang in the third inning when Cisco College took three consecutive at-bats out of Suplizio Field. The three home runs came off the bats of Calvin Hernandez, Wesley Phillips, and Dalon Farkas, scoring a total of five runs and sparking their offense.
The Wranglers would not score again until the eighth inning. That inning saw a combined 10 runs between both teams. In the eighth, the Wranglers this time turned to small ball, getting the bases loaded and laying down back-to-back bunt singles. The bunt singles brought in two of the five runs for Cisco in the inning.
Wesley Phillips led the way for the Wranglers’ hitters with three RBIs. Following him with two RBIs were Calvin Hernandez and Zachary Rheams.
Head coach for Cisco David White knows his team is capable of having big innings throughout the game, but they also get selfish and stagnant a lot at times to in a game. “We just kept grinding it out. We get to stay another day,” White said.
For Yavapai, Ramsey Romano and Caden Goldby each had three RBIs to pace the Rough Riders. Cisco College ultimately wrangled Yavapai, 10-8, sending them down to the losers bracket in the tournament.
