After trading down in the middle of the fifth round of the 2018 NFL Draft, the Denver Broncos continue to add playmakers on the offensive side of the ball. Seeking more production at the tight end position, the Broncos needed to add more depth at the position after losing three-year starter Virgil green to free agency. The Broncos used their first of two fifth round picks to select tight end Troy Fumgalli, a redshirt senior from Wisconsin.
Fumgalli will join 2017 fifth round selection Jake Butt and veteran Jeff Heuerman on the tight end depth chart. Fumgalli should have the opportunity to compete for playing time at tight right away, as no Broncos tight end caught more than 200 receiving yards last year. Green led the position with 191 receiving yards, but as noted earlier is no longer on the team.
The selection of Fumgalli gives the Broncos much-needed depth at the position but also gives them an immediate red-zone threat.
Fumgalli’s most noticeable trait is his towering height presence, standing at 6′ 5″, 245 lbs. Fumgalli possesses incredible athleticism and speed for his size, and has also developed into a solid run-blocker. The Broncos had the opportunity to coach Fumgalli at the Senior Bowl this year, giving the team enough confidence in his abilities to select him in the draft.
The Broncos have now selected two wide receivers, one running back and one tight end. Another offensive weapon shows the Broncos are making a priority to surround Keenum with as many weapons as possible in 2018.
