The Broncos’ offense over the past four weeks has been quiet. They have scored 16 points or less over the last month — and were shut out for the first time in 25 seasons against the Los Angeles Chargers. Injuries have played a part in the offense’ struggles; for the offense, it’s hared to overstate the challenge of losing Emmanuel Sanders, who injured his ankle against the New York Giants, and is a game-time decision for Monday’s game in Kansas City against the Chiefs.
Fellow wide-out Demaryius Thomas has been the Broncos’ top dog at receiver during his career in Denver, but until Sanders returns, he may be leaned on like never before. Thomas, an eight-year veteran, has had a solid-enough season, statistically, minus one important one: he has yet to score a touchdown this season. Thomas has 30 receptions for 389 yards; a whopping average of 13 yards per catch. The production is there — but the Broncos want to see No. 88 in the end zone.
Afternoon Drive’s Eric Goodman and Les Shapiro asked Thomas how the Broncos can improve on offense — and how big this week’s game is for them. “First thing? Stop turning the ball over,” Thomas replied. “Second, everybody [needs to be] doing their job — and that’s about it. Don’t turn the ball over and do your job, and we should be alright.”
With a hint of disappointment, Thomas looked back at the lack of improvement in the Chargers’ loss, noting, “It should have happened after our loss [to the Chargers]. Everybody knows it; we just have to put it on tape.”
Discussing Monday’s pivotal showdown in Kansas City, Thomas sounded enthusiastic. “It’s a very big one. It’s a conference game, and it will give us a chance to go 3-1, instead of 2-2, and put ourselves in a good position in our conference. We are going up against a great football team on the offensive side of the ball — and they get turnovers on the defensive side of the ball. It will be big for us to get this one; especially to get back on track going up against a good team.”
Thomas knows that he needs to produce the way he has been, and then some — hopefully, the touchdowns will come with time, starting tonight.
