BOULDER – University of Colorado’s Cody Williams has been named the Pac-12 Conference Men’s Basketball Freshman of the Week for his efforts during the week of Jan. 15-21, the conference office announced on Monday.
Williams, a native of Gilbert, Ariz., averaged 19.5 points, 4.0 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 1.5 steals to lead the Buffaloes to a home sweep of Oregon and Oregon State last week. He shot 69.6 percent from the field including 5 of 7 from 3-point range as Colorado improved to 12-0 at the CU Events Center; its best home start since 1968-69.
A 2023 McDonald’s All-American, Williams was also honored as Dick Vitale’s “Diaper Dandy” of the week, recognizing the nation’s best performances in his Dickie V’s Stars of the Week.
The Pac-12 Freshman of the Week honor for Williams is his first and first for the Buffaloes since KJ Simpson on Feb. 21, 2022; his second of two that season. It’s Colorado’s second Pac-12 weekly honor this year. Tristan da Silva was named Pac-12 Player of the Week on Dec. 11.
Williams scored a career-high 23 points in the win over Oregon on Jan. 18, hitting 10 of 13 from the field, including a personal best three 3-point field goals. He dished out three assists and had a pair of blocked shots. His 23 points were the most by a Colorado freshman since Jabari Walker had 24 against Georgetown in the first round of the 2021 NCAA Tournament.
In the win over Oregon State on Jan. 20, Williams had 16 points on 6 of 10 from the field and grabbed six rebounds, matching a personal-high.
Colorado is 14-5 overall and 5-3 in the Pac-12, just one-half game out of first place. The Buffaloes begin a three-game road trip on Wednesday, Jan. 24, at Washington (9 p.m. MT, ESPNU, 850 AM & 94.1 FM KOA).
