Becky Hammon, CSU graduate and WNBA star, received another honor, which adds to a long career of achievements and awards for Hammon.
On Tuesday, she was announced to be one of the WNBA’s 20 greatest and most influential players. Hammon will also have her No. 25 San Antonio Silver Stars jersey retired after Saturday’s game against the Atlanta Dream.
Hammon has done it all in the basketball world. For the CSU Rams, she was an All-American who set the all-time team records for points (2740), field goals made (918), points per game (21.92), three-pointers made (365) and assists (538).
Going undrafted initially, Hammon signed with the New York Liberty and began her 16-year career in the WNBA.
Hammon peaked in 2009 when she scored 604 points for the San Antonio Silver Stars, but had a pretty consistent career overall, averaging a 43.8% field goal percentage.
After retiring from the WNBA, Hammon couldn’t step away from the game, and she only increased the stakes.
In August of 2014, Hammon was hired as an assistant coach for the San Antonio Spurs, making her the first full-time female coach in the NBA. She continued to excel for the team as a coach, and they promoted her to head coach of their summer league team (which went on to win the Las Vegas Summer League title in 2015).
It was also reported last month that some college teams were scouting Hammon for possible head coaching positions.
Sixty players were up for this award that was based on performance, sportsmanship and their impact on team success. On Tuesday, Becky joined a list of legendary WNBA players who have also made strides for themselves, including Lisa Leslie and Tina Thompson.
