Tad Boyle addressed the media at 2017 CU Basketball Media Day on Wednesday, October 18th, 2017.
It is a changing of the guard. With the departure of five redshirt-seniors, including first round NBA Draft pick Derrick White (San Antonio Spurs), and two underclassmen guards at the end of last season, Tad Boyle has reloaded. The Head Coach discusses the new era for basketball in Boulder.
There are eight freshmen in the 2017 class and there is not a lot of time to catch everyone up before CU’s season begins on November 10th. Boyle discusses the progress report of the newcomers, including who has stood out to him.
Tad talks about regaining the edge that the Buffs have had in spurts over the last few years but needs to have all the time. Tad hopes that keeping an open competition at every position may help breed the type of attitude he’s looking for. Like he says, success isn’t given, it’s earned.
Redshirt-senior swingman George King figures to be the leader of this version of the Buffs. 2015’s Pac-12 Most Improved Player of the Year has been challenged by Tad Boyle to be more consistent with his leadership and production.
Boyle says that the goal of the program remains qualifying for the NCAA Tournament despite having such a young team. However, at Pac-12 Media Day in San Francisco on Thursday, October 12th, Colorado was selected to finish 9th in the preseason media poll. Tad says that should serve as more than enough motivation for his team to prove the doubters wrong.
Coach also addresses his thoughts on the location swap of the early season, non-conference tournament that the Buffaloes are slated to play in. The Paradise Jam was to be held on the island of St. Thomas, as it is every year, but was moved to Lynchburg, VA due to the devastating hurricane season.
Former associate head coach Jean Prioleau was hired by San Jose State University to run their program back in August. Tad explains that he has promoted long-time assistant coach Mike Rohn to associate head coach. Tad also explains the early effects that new assistant coach and former Mizzou Tigers star, Kim English is having on the team.
