The Denver Broncos carried three quarterbacks on their active roster in 2024 with Bo Nix, Jarrett Stidham, and Zach Wilson. As they go into the offseason, they’ve added another quarterback to the position room.
Denver Broncos sign Sam Ehlinger to one-year deal
After losing quarterback Zach Wilson in NFL Free Agency to the Miami Dolphins, the Denver Broncos are adding former Indianapolis Colts quarterback Sam Ehlinger on a one-year deal, which was first reported by Jordan Schultz.

Ehlinger will be the third quarterback on the Broncos’ 90-man roster throughout training camp and the preseason. Broncos head coach Sean Payton believes in having multiple QBs on the roster, especially when it pertains to divying out reps during training camp and the preseason.
Ehlinger won’t be in consideration for the Broncos’ backup QB job. That’s solely Jarrett Stidham’s role after he re-signed with the team this offseason.
“Obviously we’re excited that ‘Stiddy’ (QB Jarrett Stidham) is back,” Payton said on Monday. “He brings a veteran presence, but also a young presence about him. I know how he feels about his own abilities. We had a great room a year ago. You guys know that. It was probably unrealistic to think that we were going to have both [Dolphins QB] Zach [Wilson] and Jarrett back. So I want to see those guys obviously have success. They’re both talented players, and I think that process… I think the experience from Jarrett is helpful to [QB] Bo [Nix].”
Over the course of his three-year career with the Indianapolis Colts, Ehlinger has appeared in eight games and has started three total games. In those three games he has played in, he’s thrown three touchdowns and three interceptions.
There’s a strong chance Ehlinger could end up as a practice squad player for them in 2025, as opposed to Denver having three quarterbacks on their active roster as they did last season.
