The Denver Broncos are in the process of evaluating what potential structural changes could take place if they lose any coaches or front office executives to other jobs around the league. On Saturday, they lost one of their top executives to a promotion.

Denver Broncos assistant GM Darren Mougey lands Jets’ GM job

Denver Broncos assistant general manager Darren Mougey commanded interest in the offseason hiring cycle for a potential GM job. Initially, he interviewed with the New York Jets for the vacant position, and after getting a second interview, he accepted the Jets’ offer for him to be their next general manager.

The Jets hired former Detroit Lions defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn as their next head coach and there’s a chance Mougey lands there. The Jets had interviewed Lance Newmark a second time, and they also interviewed Cincinnati Bengals senior personnel executive Trey Brown for a second interview.

Mougey has been with the Broncos since 2012 when he first came on as a Scouting intern when Peyton Manning became the team’s quarterback. In 2013, Mougey became a personnel and scouting assistant with the team and was promoted in 2014 to a college and pro personnel scout before moving into the role of an area scout for the team from 2015 to 2019. Mougey became the team’s Assistant Director of College Scouting before being promoted to Director of Player Personnel in 2021. His next promotion came in 2022, when he was named the Assistant General Manager, serving as one of the top hands for general manager George Paton.

Mougey was considered one of the league’s brightest up-and-coming potential general managers in league circles, and now he’s landed his first GM job, where he’s more than ready for it.
