The Denver Broncos have given Bo Nix a variety of different receiving options this offseason, including an investment in the continued development of second and third-year guys. What was the story coming out of Day 1 of mandatory minicamp?
Denver Broncos wrap up Day 1 of mandatory minicamp
As the Broncos took the field on Tuesday for practice, it was business as usual for Bo Nix and Courtland Sutton and the already established connection they have with one another. While that relationship is thriving, Nix is also getting plenty of reps with a handful of receivers who are rotating in at a deep position.

Not only did Nix look to Sutton, but he also connected with Evan Engram, Troy Franklin, Lucas Krull, Michael Bandy, Jaleel McLaughlin, and others as the Broncos offense saw action in several team periods. Nix was picked once on the afternoon after a pass hit and deflected off both hands of undrafted rookie receiver Courtney Jackson, which led to Ja’Quan McMillian coming up with the takeaway.
Jackson went on to finish strong, hauling in a few passes from Jarrett Stidham and Sam Ehlinger, including a touchdown catch to end the afternoon. It’s not about how you start, it’s about how you finish. Denver’s overall receiving corps is receiving a volume of reps with every quarterback to maximize what the team has covered in their install to this point of the offseason program.
We didn’t see Devaughn Vele during Tuesday’s practice, but we saw plenty of reps with Troy Franklin, Pat Bryant, Courtney Jackson, Jerjuan Newton, Marvin Mims, and others getting reps with every quarterback.
Broncos running back room adds competition
Right after the Broncos wrapped up Day 1 of mandatory minicamp, we rushed to the podium to hear from head coach Sean Payton. Right as his press conference started, the news had broken that the Broncos and J.K. Dobbins agreed to terms on a one-year deal.
Dobbins joins McLaughlin, Audric Estime, Tyler Badie, and Blake Watson at running back for what we expect to be an extensive competition for touches during training camp and the preseason.
Payton reiterated that the team’s focus isn’t on who is getting the first reps or the volume, and that every back will get opportunities with the offense throughout the offseason.
We’ll likely get our first look at Dobbins on Wednesday for Day 2 of minicamp.
