The Denver Broncos offense swung back during Tuesday’s practice, which will hopefully lend them some confidence as they prepare to go into this morning’s practice. Here’s everything Broncos Country needs to know going into Day 7 of Broncos training camp.
Denver Broncos offense generating confidence
It was nice to see Javonte Williams and the Denver Broncos’ rushing attack have some success against the Broncos defensive line on Tuesday. Williams continues to look explosive and more like his 2021 self as training camp pushes forward. Audric Estime, the Broncos rookie draft pick out of Notre Dame, also had a big run Tuesday afternoon.
The size, speed, and physicality at that position are promising signs as the Broncos look to be more balanced offensively this upcoming season. One of the best allies for a young quarterback like Bo Nix, if he wins the starting job, is having a strong run game and good defensive play to help.
“I expect us to be ready to play when the season starts,” head coach Sean Payton said. “Just because you’re playing a new center or a quarterback certainly draws more attention, and that’s going to be important. Look, the single best thing we can do to help the quarterback is play good defense and be able to run the football. Those are the two best allies for good quarterback play, and it’s tough to play that position if you’re struggling on defense and can’t run the ball. So we’ll be ready when the start of the season comes.”
On Tuesday, it was Jarrett Stidham who received the bulk of the first-team reps at quarterback, followed up by Nix running the second-team. While Payton was non-committal on if a change in the rotation has already happened, it will be worth monitoring whether or not Zach Wilson gets a chance to run with the ones during Wednesday’s practice or if it goes back to Nix who had all of the first-team reps on Saturday.
When evaluating this ongoing quarterback competition, fans need to understand that it doesn’t necessarily get decided based on how internal training camp practices go. Where the measuring stick gets a little bigger is next week in the buildup for the Broncos’ first preseason game against the Indianapolis Colts, and joint practice + the second preseason game against the Green Bay Packers.
Practices this week and last week are a progress check for the coaches. Ultimately, they’ll sit down on Sunday for another personnel meeting the way they did last week. So enjoy the practices, Broncos Country, without getting too low or too high on plays being made or particular units not looking sharp just yet. It’s only the third day of pads.
