The Denver Broncos defense put on a clinic in last Sunday’s win against the New York Jets. Defensive coordinator Vance Joseph put together a gameplan that made life difficult for future Hall-of-Fame quarterback Aaron Rodgers en-route to Denver preventing the Jets from scoring a touchdown.
Denver Broncos Film Room: Defense flusters Aaron Rodgers, Jets offense
Denver Broncos defensive coordinator Vance Joseph was in his back last Sunday as the defense was tasked with trying to limit the explosive run game with Breece Hall and Braelon Allen, combined with the passing presence of Aaron Rodgers and the handful of receiving weapons the Jets had.
The defense limited Hall to four yards on 10 total carries and held the Jets rushing duo to a combined 38 yards in Sunday’s win.
When you have a player like Patrick Surtain II, it’s easy to pit him against the biggest explosive threat, and that was Garrett Wilson. Surtain continued his hot streak against opposing number one receivers, holding Wilson to two catches for 22 yards on 28 total routes, according to NFL Next Gen Stats.
Riley Moss was strong in coverage once again opposite of Surtain, and Denver’s front seven got after Rodgers, headlined by former Jet John-Franklin Myers. The Broncos defense sacked Rodgers five times last Sunday, with Justin Strnad, P.J. Locke, JFM, Malcolm Roach, Nik Bonitto, and Jonah Elliss getting involved.
Our latest film installment showcases how Joseph used a variety of disguised looks presnap to confuse Rodgers and the Jets offense. At various points of the game, Joseph deployed pressure looks of seven, six, five, and four players at various times, including on fourth down, which led to Locke coming up with a sack on a safety blitz.
