The Denver Broncos are in a position to make franchise history with Bo Nix after he was named the starting quarterback on Wednesday following practice. John Elway, one historical figure of the franchise, shared his thoughts while coming off the green at the BMW Championship at Castle Pines.
Denver Broncos Hall of Fame QB John Elway shares his thoughts on Bo Nix
Bo Nix will be the Denver Broncos first rookie quarterback to start Week 1 of the NFL season since John Elway. Nix will be the first Broncos rookie QB drafted by the franchise to start in Week 1, which is historic in its own right.
Elway led the Broncos to numerous Super Bowl appearances as a player, winning two of them — also appearing in two Super Bowls as an executive with the team and winning one at Super Bowl 50. Hopefully, Nix can help lead Denver back to winning games and competing.
As he came off the green in Castle Pines, where the BMW Championship is taking place, Elway shared his thoughts shortly after Sean Payton made his announcement.
John Elway talks about Bo Nix being named the Denver Broncos' starting quarterback:
“He’s going to have his ups and downs as a young guy—I had plenty of those—but I think he’s got all the talent, will, and mind strength to be able to do it.”#BroncosCountry pic.twitter.com/hMg6kQzLuv

“I think obviously Bo is tremendously talented, he’s played a lot of college football, he’s ahead of the curve when it comes to that,” Elway said. “I think Sean Payton will be great for him. The offense that they’re going will protect him, I think they’re pretty good on the offensive line to be able to run the football. Bo is a mature guy and it’ll be fun for them to see them work. Like I said, I think Sean knows how to develop quarterbacks, he’ll keep him in the right situations and not put too much on him and allow him to continue to improve week in and week out. Bo is going to see it, it’s a big jump from the preseason to regular season, I’m sure he’ll handle that well, he’s going to have his ups and downs as a young guy, which I had plenty of those, but I think he’s got all of the talent, will, and mind strength to be able to do it.”
He even shared some advice for Nix as he goes about his rookie season, reflecting on where he once was.
John Elway speaks on what advice he would give Bo Nix ahead of his rookie season as QB1:
“You just got to take it a play at a time… I remember my first snap we are in Three Rivers Stadium, and I’m staring across from Jack Lambert, going, ‘How the hell did I get here?’” pic.twitter.com/5xWLLFsZhQ
