The Denver Broncos wrapped up rookie minicamp this past weekend, and the buzz in Broncos Country feels very optimistic after the team got their first look at Bo Nix.
Denver Broncos get first look at Bo Nix
Broncos head coach Sean Payton got his first on-field look at Bo Nix this past week for the start of Broncos rookie minicamp.
Nix was so consistent and efficient that Payton used a golf analogy to describe how he felt about how he practiced.
“[QB Bo Nix] had two or three down-the-field throws today,” Payton said on Saturday. “It’s almost like watching a good golfer. Sometimes when you watch his game over two years, there’s a patience to how he plays. The ball comes out, and—I don’t want to use the term ‘boring,’ that’s not the right term, but [he makes] pretty good decisions. With each play, the efficiency of how he’s operating, and all of that.”
Everything at rookie minicamp was on air, without contact or pads, so the true evaluation will come into play when training camp happens in late July or early August. But for Payton, the operation of the offense and minicamp was a promising sign in his eyes, which in return, has created some excitement for Broncos Country.
In particular, Nix’s touch on his throws at all three levels was consistently sharp during Saturday’s open media viewing portion of practice, and he got the ball out of his hands quickly within the structure of the various drills the offense went through.
He’s still learning and going through the process of understanding Payton’s offense and the Broncos’ vision for him, but him getting these first reps on the field serves as an advantage for him ahead of Zach Wilson and Jarrett Stidham taking the field.
“He’s been awesome,” Nix said of Payton. “He’s been teaching me so much already. He’s got a lot of knowledge and he’s built a pedigree of when he talks, you listen. That is what I am excited [about]. To continue learning from him more and more each day as we go through practice and walkthroughs. You just can’t learn enough from him.”
The Denver Broncos will continue with Phase 2 of their offseason program. Important dates to keep in mind for Broncos fans are May 21-23, May 28-30, and June 3-6, when OTAs continue.
June 11-13 will be the start of mandatory minicamp before the team is off five weeks leading into training camp.
