The Denver Broncos are keeping an eye on defensive back and linebacker depth across the NFL ahead of their season opener against the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday.

Denver Broncos host 10 players for workouts on Monday

While everybody was enjoying Labor Day off, the Denver Broncos were busy at work with their first practice of the week ahead of Sunday’s season opener on the road against the Seahawks, and we were there covering practice. Prior to practice, the team hosted over ten players for a workout as they continue to evaluate positional needs as the season begins.

Denver hosted four linebackers, five defensive backs, and one defensive tackle, according to the league’s transaction wire.

Linebackers hosted:

  • Chris Garrett – Concordia, St. Paul
  • Tyreek Maddox-Williams – Rutgers
  • Donavan Muti – Houston
  • Luiji Vilain – Wake Forest

Defensive backs hosted:

  • Christian Holmes – Oklahoma State
  • Zech McPhearson – Texas Tech
  • Chris Wilcox – BYU
  • Damarion Williams – Houston
  • A.J. Woods – Pittsburgh

Defensive tackle hosted:

  • Kenneth Odumegwu – no college

Right now the team isn’t looking to make any big changes to their 53-man roster, but they are monitoring defensive back depth and linebacker depth in the event of an injury or the potential of adding a player to the practice squad in the future. The workouts ended with no deal or roster move occurring for any of the players in attendance.

Right now, Denver’s linebacker depth consists of Alex Singleton and Cody Barton as the starters, with Justin Strnad and Kristian Welch leading the way as the two backups. Undrafted rookie Levelle Bailey is currently on the team’s practice squad.

At cornerback, Patrick Surtain II, Levi Wallace, Riley Moss, Tremon Smith, Ja’Quan McMillian, and Kris Abrams Draine round out the depth. The safety position currently features P.J. Locke, Brandon Jones, Devon Key, JL Skinner, and Keidron Smith.

One of the key philosophies for head coach Sean Payton and general manager George Paton is always finding ways to improve the roster. Right now, they’re content with the current 53-man roster, but a handful of personnel changes typically occur with the practice squad throughout the first few weeks of the season.

It’s something worth keeping an eye on.
