The Denver Broncos are being smart with how they bring along Dre Greenlaw after his injury scare two weeks ago. With Denver’s first preseason game coming up on Saturday against the San Francisco 49ers, he’s unlikely to play against his former team.

After Dre Greenlaw suffered a bit of scare regarding his quad in practice a couple weeks ago, Broncos head coach Sean Payton reaffirmed the team’s approach in being smart with how they bring him along. The goal is and has always been to get players to the regular season, and part of that is playing starters during the preseason.
Greenlaw is the exception here in Week 1 of the preseason against his former team. He has been an observer at practice since he suffered the scare and did not participate in Thursday’s joint practice against San Francisco.
Following practice, Payton shared a brief update on Greenlaw and his timeline.
“He’s doing really well,” Payton said. “We were fortunate last week with a little scare. He probably won’t play in the game and will be back working full speed on Monday.”
After Thursday’s joint practice, 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan talked about some of his former players, Greenlaw, Mike McGlinchey, D.J. Jones, and Talanoa Hufanga, who now play for Denver.
“Yeah, I got to see Dre, got to see Huff, got to see [Denver Broncos DL] D.J. [Jones] and the only guy I missed was [Denver Broncos OL Mike] McGlinchey, which was harder to cross paths because I wasn’t on their side of the field but awesome to see those guys,” Shanahan said. “I was glad Dre got the day off.”
If Greenlaw returns to practice on Monday at full speed, he’ll likely play next Saturday when Denver hosts the Arizona Cardinals in their second preseason game.
