The Denver Broncos have lost one of their top defensive players for the remainder of the season after he suffered a torn ACL in Sunday’s game to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Denver Broncos lose Alex Singleton to season-ending injury

Alex Singleton has been one of the Denver Broncos top defensive players over the course of the last two seasons and will now miss the remainder of the 2024 NFL season.

Singleton tore his ACL in the Broncos 26-7 victory against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday. While the loss of him on the roster this season will be a massive blow to Denver’s defense, which is playing at a high level through the first three weeks, he played 100% of the team’s snaps with the injury.

After the game, he experienced soreness and bruising on his knee and was looked at by the team’s training staff, according to head coach Sean Payton. The team ran tests on his knee, in which the MRI revealed that his ACL was torn.

“His tear was unusual in that it caused some bruising,” Payton said. “Fortunately it’s just the ACL. It’s unusual for a player to feel asymptomatic if you will.”

Now, the Broncos’ defense has to adjust their focus, with Cody Barton, Justin Strnad, and Kristian Welch headlining the team’s positional depth on the 53-man roster. Help is on the way at the position after the team signed veteran linebacker Kwon Alexander to the team’s practice squad. Denver added another veteran linebacker, Zach Cunningham to their practice squad as well.

“Look, we’ve got a lot of options,” Payton said. “I’m not going to cover them. But we’ve got a handful of guys, we’ve got probably two or three different directions we’ll go, and then we’ll just see how it goes.”

Singleton will head to season-ending injured reserve. Running back Tyler Badie was promoted to the team’s 53-man roster in a corresponding move ahead of Sunday’s game against the New York Jets.
