Denver Broncos head coach Sean Payton and general manager George Paton met with the media at the NFL Combine on Tuesday where they shared their thoughts on the team’s approach to the offseason, including Courtland Sutton’s looming contract talks as he enters the final year of his deal.

Denver Broncos will meet with Courtland Sutton’s representation at some point to discuss contract

For the last handful of years, Courtland Sutton’s name has been linked to trade discussions, but the Denver Broncos have never once entertained the idea of trading him. For as much talk as there was about other teams’ interest in Sutton, the Broncos were never going to move on from him.

Last offseason, they restructured his deal and added some incentives that saw him get paid for his productive 2024 campaign.

On Tuesday, Broncos head coach Sean Payton and general manager George Paton both emphasized the importance Sutton has to the roster and where they are heading.

“We felt like he had a real good season,” Payton said. “He’s important to what we’re doing.” That he was in 2024.

Sutton hauled in 81 catches for 1081 yards and eight receiving touchdowns while playing and appearing in all 17 games last season. He became Bo Nix’s top option and that connection is important for the organization to continue to build on.

“Courtland’s one of our guys,” Paton said. “Team captain. I’ve said this for a couple of years in a row. We want him here. We’ll have those discussions at the right time.”

Right now, Payton and Paton are juggling free agency preparation and NFL Draft preparation at the same time, with the Combine moving to an earlier date than it used to be. With the Broncos in good shape with the NFL salary cap, their window for speaking with Sutton’s representation will be balanced somewhere between the middle of free agency and before the NFL Draft more than likely.

Maintaining Sutton’s role and presence in the offense is crucial if the Broncos hope to sustain continuity around and for Nix this upcoming season while also banking on the continued development of Marvin Mims, Troy Franklin, and Devaughn Vele.
