The Denver Broncos have moved on from the last member of the team’s Super Bowl 50 championship roster.
As players reported for the start of organized team activities (OTAs) on Tuesday, the Broncos released kicker Brandon McManus as first reported by ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
McManus has been the Broncos longest-tenured player entering 2023, but will now be playing for a new team this upcoming season.
During the Broncos’ Super Bowl 50 run, McManus was instrumental in the team’s post-season success by going 10-10 on field goal attempts. After eight seasons with the team, he and the team are moving on.
Broncos general manager George Paton came out and thanked McManus for his time in Denver.
“Brandon has been a key player and presence with the Broncos for nearly a decade, making outstanding contributions to our team and community,” Paton said in a press release. “Developing into one of the NFL’s most productive kickers, Brandon made so many clutch kicks for this franchise over the years as a Super Bowl champion and team captain. He will always hold a special place in Denver Broncos history. We thank Brandon for all he did for the Broncos, and we wish him and his family the very best in the future.”
With McManus’ departure, the Broncos will be in the market for a new kicker under head coach Sean Payton in 2023.
Notable free agent names available include Mason Crosby who played college football locally at CU, Robbie Gould, Elliott Fry, Randy Bullock, Parker White, and veteran Ryan Succop.
Denver recently had UTSA kicker Jared Sackett attend rookie minicamp last week and he could be a potential option if Denver looks to have a kicker competition during training camp.
What the Broncos truly need out of their next kicker is consistency, which could be the main reason Denver decided to move on from McManus. In 2022, he went 28 of 36 including six of seven from 20-29 yards, four of six from 30-39 yards, 10-10 from 40-49 yards, and eight of 13 from 50+ yards.
Since Sean Payton has come into his role as head coach, the Denver Broncos have completely revamped the special teams side of the ball and will have a new kicker, punter, and long snapper in 2023 with new special teams coach Ben Kotwica and the assistance of special teams legendary coach Mike Westhoff as Payton’s right hand.
It will be interesting to see who Denver looks to bring in and what they offer that the team felt McManus didn’t at this point of his career.
