Ahead of the Denver Broncos’ first regular-season practice on Wednesday, the team terminated the contract of a practice-squad cornerback and hosted several different positions for tryouts on Tuesday.

Denver Broncos move on from practice squad cornerback

Sean Payton said that during the first few weeks of the regular season, there is typically some movement on the 53-man roster and practice squad. Before their first regular-season practice on Wednesday, the team made one roster move on Tuesday afternoon.

The Broncos terminated the contract of practice squad cornerback Quinton Newsome on Tuesday, per the NFL’s transaction wire.

Newsome was on the Broncos’ practice squad all throughout the 2024 season and could eventually return, but right now, it looks like the team may be looking to add to other positions.

Broncos host several players for tryouts on Tuesday

The Broncos hosted seven players on Tuesday on a tryout basis.

According to the NFL’s transaction wire, they hosted two running backs, three wide receivers, and two tight ends.

  • Davis-Price, Tyrion – RB, Louisiana State
  • Green, Bryson – WR, Wisconsin
  • Swinson, Messiah – TE, Arizona State
  • Thomas, Thayer – WR, North Carolina State
  • Toure, Samori – WR, Nebraska
  • Turner, Cole – TE, Nevada
  • Vaughn, Deuce – RB, Kansas State

Vaughn spent time with the Dallas Cowboys for the last two seasons and is the most notable tryout name. Currently, the Broncos have four running backs on their 53-man roster and no backs on the practice squad.

Denver currently has AT Perry and Michael Bandy at WR on the practice squad, and two tight ends, Caleb Lohner and Patrick Murtagh.

Ultimately, the Broncos have a lot of flexibility with the potential to elevate practice squad players to the gameday roster three times before they ultimately have to be put on the 53-man roster, but those moves will be contingent upon positional need, special teams ability, and more throughout the season.

We’ll see if Denver ultimately signs one of these players to the practice squad this week.
