The Denver Broncos are moving on from one of their off-season free-agency signings as they look toward the future and focus on further developing some of their younger players.
Denver Broncos releasing veteran pass rusher Frank Clark
After signing a one-year deal with the Denver Broncos during organized team activities, the team is moving on from veteran pass rusher Frank Clark, as first reported by NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero.
Clark was ruled out of Thursday Night’s matchup against the Kansas City Chiefs. The writing was on the wall for Clark who had played just 11 snaps defensively last Sunday against the New York Jets.
With the emergence of Jonathon Cooper and Nik Bonitto, Clark wasn’t in line to receive impact snaps or minutes. On top of that, third-year pass rusher Baron Browning could return next weekend against the Green Bay Packers.
Denver supplemented their rotation with Ronnie Perkins as their third outside linebacker on Thursday Night.
Clark was initially signed after Browning was placed on the PUP list after having off-season knee surgery. Denver initially looked for trade partners for the former Super Bowl champion, but there wasn’t strong interest from other teams.
Earlier this week, Clark restructured his deal with Denver, opening the door for his release or trade. Last week, Denver traded pass rusher Randy Gregory to the San Francisco 49ers.
These moves indicate a desire from the team to invest in their younger players moving forward at outside linebacker in particular and potentially other areas of the roster.
With the Broncos sitting at a 1-5 record, this could be the first of many potential changes as the NFL’s Trade Deadline approaches on October 31st. Other players linked to potential trade rumors are wide receivers Courtland Sutton and Jerry Jeudy.
Both players were the subject of trade rumors dating back to the offseason, but Denver never went through with any move, with Sean Payton looking to see what he could do with them offensively.
There’s a real possibility that this Broncos roster looks entirely different by November.
