Forget about the Denver Broncos potentially getting involved in adding a tight end at the NFL Trade Deadline, they’re signing a former first-round pick.

Marcedes Lewis, that former first-round pick, was drafted in 2006, when I was in seventh grade. Sean Payton had just become the head coach of the New Orleans Saints. Fast forward nearly 20 years, and here we are.

Lewis was signed this morning to the team’s practice squad after he came in for a tryout yesterday, and it’s very possible that the Broncos continue to roll with Evan Engram and Adam Trautman as their primary two at tight end, while elevating Lewis from the practice squad to the gameday roster.

He has three standard elevations, so the Broncos could use them over the course of the next three weeks, or they could randomize them. So much depends on the matchup, but Lewis is being brought in as a blocking tight end.

This move comes after the Broncos put in two waiver claims on tight ends on Monday, but were not awarded them, which then added to the speculation about them potentially being buyers at the NFL Trade Deadline at tight end specifically.

The team has not yet placed Nate Adkins on injured reserve, which could indicate there’s a chance he returns at some point this season, but that could always change.

Denver is back on the practice field today, and they could end up making more roster moves over the next few days, but as it stands, it appears that Payton is going to roll with the veteran option alongside Engram and Trautman.

The Broncos also signed veteran quarterback Sam Ehlinger to the practice squad this morning, after they released him yesterday to clear space for linebacker Dre Greenlaw to return to the active roster.
