The Denver Broncos impressive turnaround in the last two seasons under Sean Payton has them in a position where the rest of the NFL may be looking to add some of their coaching staff to their organizations in coordinator roles. The Chicago Bears interviewed one Broncos’ assistant coach for their offensive coordinator position.
Denver Broncos TE coach Declan Doyle interviews for Chicago Bears OC job
As the Chicago Bears usher in a new era with freshly appointed head coach Ben Johnson, who came over previously as the offensive coordinator with the Detroit Lions — he is now beginning to assemble a staff, and a Broncos’ assistant could be joining him.
Broncos tight end coach Declan Doyle interviewed for the Bears’ OC job, as first reported by NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport. Doyle reunited with head coach Sean Payton in 2023 when he landed the Denver job and now could be expanding his resume.
If he’s given the job, he’ll receive the title of offensive coordinator, but the expectation right now is that Johnson will be calling plays for Caleb Williams and the Bears on the sideline. This is similar to what Joe Lombardi does for Payton on gameday here in Denver.
ICYMI: Darren Mougey leaves Broncos for Jets’ GM job
Doyle oversaw the Broncos’ tight end position that didn’t see much feature in Payton’s offense over the course of the last two seasons. He’s considered internally as a well-respected coach and a tremendous teacher, according to players in the tight end room.
If he lands the job, Payton’s coaching tree will continue to expand if that’s the case. Aaron Glenn took the New York Jets head coach job. Dan Campbell has done a terrific job in Detroit, and there’s a possibility that Broncos’ special teams assistant coach Chris Banjo could reunite with Glenn in New York as their potential special teams coordinator.
So, while the Denver Broncos’ 2024 campaign was good, if they lose a few coaches in this cycle, who Payton hires to replace them will be a crucial task this offseason.
