ENGLEWOOD, CO — The Denver Broncos were back on the practice field on Wednesday ahead of their Sunday showdown with the Green Bay Packers. How will the Broncos address the loss of tight end Greg Dulcich who could end up on the shelf again?

Denver Broncos practice report from Wednesday

As the team prepares for Sunday’s game against Jordan Love and the Green Bay Packers (2-3), what were some of the key storylines following Wednesday’s practice in Dove Valley?

What will the Broncos do at the tight end position going forward?

Broncos TE Greg Dulcich likely to miss more time

After suffering another hamstring injury in Thursday Night’s loss to the Kansas City Chiefs, tight end Greg Dulcich could be on the shelf for a longer period of time.

Broncos head coach Sean Payton touched on Dulcich’s initial recovery process from the injury he suffered in Week 1, noting that the team followed protocol with his return to play to a T.

“We went through the protocols, and we felt like we were pretty patient,” Payton said. “You rely on the athlete; you rely on the medical team and the experts. You go through the recovery and the rehab. You spend a lot of time really testing before you ever go out into game conditions. It’s easy to look back on that and say, ‘Hey, was it too soon?’[With] all the information we and the feedback, he felt confident. We regroup with him right now and get him quickly up to speed to recover and we go from there. It’s unfortunate because I know he’s frustrated. It’s been a recurring issue for him, specifically with the hamstrings.”

Throughout the course of the last five weeks, Dulcich spent the first two to three weeks working on light movement and a lot of stretching combined with the active recovery options the team provides to players on a daily basis. Over the course of the last two weeks, Dulcich did more lateral movement, planting, cutting, and explosive movement on the side field, and looked great.

Unfortunately, this is his fourth hamstring injury in two years and now the team’s focus is on trying to counter the impact of losing him in the lineup once again.

9News’ Mike Klis had reported earlier in the day on Wednesday that the team was working through whether or not they would place Dulcich back on injured reserve.

Organizationally, the team is evaluating what the best course of action is for Dulcich.

“Good question,” Payton responded on whether or not the team would look at placing Dulcich back on injured reserve. “The last 48 hours, we’re evaluating it. If we need to, we will. I’m sure he’s frustrated, just like we are for him. We’ll see, though. We haven’t done that yet.”

If he lands back on injured reserve, it’s expected that practice squad tight end Lucas Krull will be elevated to the 53-man roster.
