The Colorado Rockies made a series of roster moves Saturday ahead of their game with the Washington Nationals, including designating relief pitcher Jordan Lyles for assignment and activating Greg Holland from the paternity list.
Lyles, has gone 0-2 with a 6.94 ERA (46.2 IP, 36 ER), 12 walks and 33 strikeouts in 33 appearances with the Rockies this season. He has allowed 11 home runs this season, tying him with Tyler Anderson (on the 60-day DL) for the most home runs per nine innings on the club. His 6.94 ERA is the worst on the club.
Colorado has 10 days to return Lyles to the 40-man roster after designating him for assignment. After that, they will have four options with Lyles moving forward:
- Place him player on waivers (which can only be done within the first 7 days of the 10-day period)
- Trade him
- Release him
- Outright him from the 40-man roster into the Minor Leagues
Lyles appeared in 105 games (218.0 IP) for the Rockies over four seasons, compiling a 13-16 record and 5.22 ERA.
Holland, the MLB saves leader, returns to the bullpen after being placed on the paternity list Wednesday. The right-hander is 1-1 with a Major-League leading 31 saves in 32 opportunities this season with Colorado, posting a 1.72 ERA (36.2 IP, 7 ER), 18 walks and 49 strikeouts. His 31 saves are already tied for fourth-most in franchise history.
In other corresponding moves, the Rockies recalled outfielder Raimel Tapia and optioned right-handed reliever Carlos Estevez to Triple-A.
The four moves are part of a cascade of roster changes that began Wednesday night when Colorado traded for Phillies All-Star reliever Pat Neshek. Infielder/outfielder Ian Desmond was placed on the 10-day disabled list (calf strain) Friday when Neshek was added to the roster.
