In the JUCO World Series, really at any level off baseball, when a team scores eight runs they should have a good chance to win. For Delgado (LA) (37-18, 1-2 JUCO), eight runs wasn’t enough, mixed with four total errors and a really good hitting team in Harford (MD) (54-10, 2-1 JUCO). All that wrapped into one spelled elimination for Delgado from the tournament.
Harford sprayed the ball all over the field for 13 hits, including two home runs, two triples, and four doubles. Two of the doubles came in the first inning to deep center field, 410 feet from home plate. Leading the Fighting Owls from the dish, Ben Bomberger and Luke Johnson, each with three RBIs and two hits.
Doing the pitching for Harford going 3.1 innings giving up six runs, five of them earned, with five strikeouts was Michael Devecchio. In relief of Devecchio, Nick Delp went 5.2 innings pitched, giving up two runs with three strikeouts.
Head coach Tom Eller knows that his Harford Fighting Owls have finally found their offensive stride in their third game of the JUCO World Series.
“We swung the bats. That’s what it comes down to swinging the bats. We had great BP today, hit a couple cars over at [Colorado Mesa University] over the fence… we were just confident all the way through,” Eller said.
Also coming alive, previously with no hits in the tournament was Daulton Weeks who went 2-for-6 in the game with 2 RBIs and a home run. For the Delgado Dolphins Owen Magee paced them with a big game, going 4-for-4 with 4 RBIs.
