Colorado State’s Mostafa Hassan recorded a mark of 69 feet, 11 inches to shatter the Mountain West and program records in the shot put at the Mt. SAC Relays on Saturday.

Entering Saturday’s competition, only four athletes in the world had a better mark than Hassan during outdoor competition in 2017. Hassan’s mark of 69-11/21.31m was more than three feet better than his own previous Mountain West and CSU outdoor record of 66-3 (20.19m). Hassan captured the shot put title at the Mt. SAC Relays elite invitational, his first shot put competition since winning the 2017 indoor national title in the shot put.

Hassan’s mark was three feet better than the nation’s best mark entering Saturday (66-10.75/20.39m by Virginia’s Oghenakpobo Efekoro). Additionally, the Cairo, Egypt native has the best mark on the NCAA west qualifying list by more than five feet (64-5.75/19.65 by Southern Illinois’ Jared Kern), as well as the best in the Mountain West this season by over 12 feet (57-4.25/17.48m by CSU’s Daniel Weirich).

As of this writing, full women’s shot put results were not available. However, reports from the Mt. SAC Relays indicated that CSU’s Aaliyah Pete placed third with a mark of 56-2 (17.14m). That mark would break her own school and Mountain West records by over half of a foot.

Prior to Saturday’s competition, only eight NCAA athletes, three NCAA west qualifying athletes and 25 athletes in the world had a better outdoor shot put mark than Pete’s unofficial 56-2 mark. The senior’s mark would be the Mountain West’s best this season by nearly five feet.

At the Beach Invitational (Long Beach, Calif.), Emily Romo clocked a time of 54.07 in the 400 meters, just shy of her personal best (53.90). Romo, who ranks second in the 400 on CSU’s all-time outdoor list, placed as the No. 2 collegian and fifth overall out of the 87-athlete 400 meters field. Emma Kratzberg ran her second-best time in the 400-meter hurdles, placing seventh out of 56 athletes with a time of 1:01.15.

McKenzie Wright finished as the No. 2 collegian and fifth overall out of 70 athletes in the high jump. The sophomore recorded a best height of 5-8.75 (1.75m).

Kelcey Bedard highlighted CSU throwing performances at the Beach Invitational with a mark of 172-9 (52.66m) in the women’s discus. Bedard placed third amongst collegians and sixth overall out of 71 total competitors. Daniel Weirich placed 10th in the shot put at the Beach Invitational with a mark of 55-2.75 (16.83m).
