Dr. Bruce Bean, a neuro-physiologist at Harvard Medical School, has created a new product for athletes called HOTSHOT that prevents cramping before it even starts.

He decided to research the idea of cramping when kayaking with his colleague, Dr. MacKinnon, and their hands and arms started to cramp in a dangerous manner. They knew hydration and electrolytes were not the issue.

“Being hydrated or replacing your electrolytes will not prevent cramping, as many athletes know,” Dr. Bean said as he joined The Sports Guy Mike Show AM 1340 | FM 104.7 on Tuesday. “So this is a very new concept we have come up with. By activating the sensory neurons in the mouth you can disrupt cramping coming from the motor neurons.”

HOTSHOT can inhibit a person’s muscle cramping by targeting the neuron that’s controlling the muscle. Cramping doesn’t occur in the muscle, but from the nerve. HOTSHOT can disrupt that firing from very strong stimulating sensory nerves in the mouth.

This product should be taken by persons before working out or before their competition. Some people have told Dr. Bean that they even take it after their workout to help their recovery.

IRONMAN World Champion Craig “Crowie” Alexander also joined Sports Guy Mike on Mile High Sports Radio to discuss how HOTSHOT has helped him and his career.

“I haven’t cramped since I’ve been using it, for 8 months now,” Crowie said. “I use it before all my races. I take it about 30 to 40 minutes before I race.”
