The Colorado Rockies announced the 25-man roster for the NLDS Thursday. The club’s roster choices for the series with Milwaukee were unsurprising for the most part. The most notable omission was starting pitcher Jon Gray though.
In his most recent start against the Nationals on Sept. 29, the Rockies lost 12-2. In the outing, Gray was only able to go four innings and the fourth-year pro was charged with five runs. On the year, Gray has a 5.12 ERA and has given up a league-high 98 runs.
With Gray not on the roster, manager Bud Black has opted to keep both Tyler Anderson (4.55 ERA) and D.J. Johnson (4.26 ERA) in the mix for the series with the Brewers. In seven games in September, Johnson has given up three runs in 6.1 innings.
Johnson is not the only newcomer to make the cut. Rookie utility man, Garrett Hampson made the roster over Pat Valaika. In 40 at-bats this season, Hampson has 11 hits and a .275 batting average.
Along with the young guys, Carlos Gonzalez, Gerardo Parra and Matt Holliday provide a veteran presence for the Rockies. And the everyday stars like Charlie Blackmon, Nolan Arenado and Trevor Story round out the 25-man roster.
The Rockies and Brewers will play Game 1 in Milwaukee, WI., Thursday afternoon. First pitch is scheduled for 3:07 p.m. MT.
