Colorado State men’s basketball has added former Oral Roberts shooting guard Kris Martin to the program for the 2017-18 season, head coach Larry Eustachy announced. Martin will sit out next season due to NCAA transfer rules and have two years of eligibility remaining.
“Kris is a high character kid that comes from a great family,” Eustachy said. “He’s a big addition for us. He can play multiple positions and is a kid that is going to just continue to improve because his work ethic is second to none! Not only is he a great shooter, but he’s a guy that plays hard on both sides of the ball and is completely bought into our program. We are glad he is with us as he was drawing interest from many quality schools, including Iowa State, Seton Hall, Middle Tennessee State and UAB.”
In his two seasons at ORU, Martin played in 59 games with 37 starts, averaging 10.3 points and 3.1 rebounds per game. He recorded 30 career double-digit scoring games, shot 40.6 percent from the field and 37.9 percent (110-290) from the 3-point range.
In 2016-17, the 6-5 Frisco, Texas native started in 23 of the 28 games he played, ranking third in scoring for the Golden Eagles and 18th in the Summit League with 13.2 points per game, while shooting 40.8 percent from the field. He led ORU in scoring seven times as a sophomore, tallying at least 10 points in 18 games, including four in Summit League action and six overall of 20 or more. Martin set a career high at Missouri State Dec. 14 with 35 points, including career bests of 13 made field goals and seven 3-pointers. He was ORU’s top 3-pointer shooter with 73 triples and ranked 39th in the nation and 3rd in The Summer League in 3-point percentage at 40.6 percent. He also tied for 11th in steals with 36 and was 15th in free-throw percentage at 74.7 percent.
As a freshman in 2015-16, the ESPN two-star recruit was one of only four players to play in all 31 games for ORU, starting 14 of the last 17 games. He averaged 7.7 points per game, fourth best on the team, and was third with 37 3-pointers made. He scored a season-high 18 points on two occasions, at LSU and at IUPUI. He also averaged 2.6 boards overall and 3.1 boards per contest in league opponents, with a high of eight at IPFW. He made a career-best 10 free throws against South Dakota State, one of just two ORU players to do that in a single game.
