The Denver Broncos are in regular-season mode as they prepare for the Tennessee Titans in just over a week and a half. Marvin Mims exited Wednesday’s practice and did not return, but the Broncos aren’t overly concerned about it. What does the team’s receiving room look like, and what could be a contingency plan in the event Mims misses any time?
Denver Broncos WR Marvin Mims exits Wednesday’s practice
Normally, in the regular season, if a player leaves the practice field early due to an injury, it wouldn’t necessarily be reported on. Media is able to watch practice in its entirety for the remainder of this week, but as the regular season officially kicks off next week, we’ll go back to only getting team stretch and individual period as the timeframe we’ll be allowed to watch.
Third-year wide receiver Marvin Mims left Wednesday’s practice with what Sean Payton was calling a groin injury. He did not return, but Payton said the team isn’t overly concerned about it.
Soft tissue injuries are always something to keep an eye on, but we’ll wait to hear from Payton on Thursday when he’s scheduled to meet with the media to see if there are any updates he can share or if we see Mims return to practice Thursday morning.
But let’s look at options here. In the event Mims misses some time, what does the Broncos’ plans potentially look like without him?
With Denver rolling with five players on the 53-man roster, Mims’ missing time would likely mean an increase in Trent Sherfield Sr.’s on-field snaps, and/or a practice squad gameday elevation of AT Perry.
What about the return game? You’d probably see the Broncos adjust their return game with Tyler Badie and another running back like Jaleel McLaughlin, but the bigger question would be who backs Mims up on punt return.
It could be Badie or a defensive back who seemingly fit the mold for returning a little bit more than the rest of the Broncos’ receiving room, unless Troy Franklin could.
Stay tuned for more updates on Thursday.
