Metropolitan State University-Denver graduate Mitch McCarron has been busy since receiving his diploma a couple weeks ago. The 6’3” shooting guard from Brisbane, Australia has participated in pre-draft NBA workouts with the Denver Nuggets, L.A. Lakers and Golden State Warriors.

McCarron had a very successful run at MSU-Denver and it was no surprise that he would get the opportunity to show off his skills to prospective pro teams – even those in the NBA. He was named 2014-15 NABC National Player of the Year, a first-team Division II All-American, a 2014-15 Capital One first team Academic All-American and RMAC academic player of the year. He also earned the RMAC Summit Award for the top GPA (3.85) at the conference championship site, according to nba.com.

McCarron stuck to his roots and hired an Australian agent to help out on his road to the NBA. Daniel Moldovan is the man that is guiding McCarron through this exciting process.

Working out with the Nuggets was something extra special, as it was very close to his college home. Pepsi Center, where the Nuggets call home, is literally across the street from MSU-Denver.

“I am just so excited to be here, it was a great opportunity. Like you said, you walk across the road and watch them play, and then you get to play in their facility. It’s just an awesome opportunity,” he told chatsports.com.

This isn’t the first time that a former Roadrunner has had a workout with the Denver Nuggets. MSU-Denver 2014 graduate Brandon Jefferson worked out for the Nuggets last year, according to gometrostate.com. Jefferson is currently playing in Finland for KTP Kotka basketball.

After McCarron’s workout in Denver, he headed to the west coast to put in some time with the Lakers and the Warriors. After working out with the Lakers, he told reporters for the Lakers that he was up against bigger guys but he is a versatile player and he has a lot of heart and that is what can separate him from other players.

If he gets drafted, he would be the fourth MSU-Denver alum to play in the NBA. It has been nearly 20 years since a Roadrunner has played in the world’s top professional league. Gene Edwards and Shaun Tillman played for the Nuggets in 1990 and Australian Cory Reader played for the Los Angeles Clippers in 1996.

No matter where McCarron ends up, this young Aussie has a bright future ahead of him, and hopefully that future includes a spot in the NBA.
