With everything firing on all cylinders, the Colorado Rockies motored their way to a big victory over the National League West-leading Los Angeles Dodgers.
A home off the bat of Hundley came in the fourth inning of the affair pitting Jon Gray and Kenta Maeda against one another on the mound. Hundley got a pitch he could handle and cranked it to deep left field, putting the Rox ahead 2-0 in the fourth.
The Rockies padded the lead in the seventh inning with hits by Charlie Blackmon, D.J. LeMahieu, Nolan Arenado, and Gerardo Parra, plating five insurance runs.
For manager Walt Weiss, it was positive to see his guys show up in the clutch spots.
“That seventh inning we put together some real nice at-bats.” Weiss said following the game.
In the game, Nolan Arenado tied a club record with his 33rd RBI in the month of August. Gerardo Parra logged career hit number 1,000 and Stephen Cardullo carded his first.
While the bats were a big reason in the team’s win, Gray’s dazzling performance was the highlight of the night.
Gray charged his way through six inning of work, allowing just four hits on the night while striking out eight.
Gray’s pitches were sharp, allowing him to breeze through the Dodgers lineup.
“I was glad to see everything working.” Gray said. “The intensity I think is big time.”
This was a big one for Gray, as his previous two starts were far below the standard he had set for himself all season long.
“Great job by Johnny once again.” Weiss said. “He did a great job getting through six.”
The win was a good one for a surging Rockies team, and to do it against arguably the hottest team in baseball and the leaders of the National League West will surely give the team some mojo as they gear up for the final month of the season.
