The conclusion of training camp brings optimism to NFL fans across the nation as real football is that much closer.
In Denver, it means fans are closing in on watching what looks like one of the deepest pass-rushing groups in the NFL. The Broncos’ depth in edge rushers is evident in the fact that Shaq Barrett – a player who has 11 sacks across 15 career starts – is their fourth-best option.
Speaking to Eric Goodman & Les Shapiro of Mile High Sports AM 1340 | FM 104.7, Barrett talked about his ability to play with such a talented group of pass rushers.
“It’s just all about the work we put in,” Barrett explained. “Now we’re putting the work in so it’s looking like the sky’s the limit for us right now. We’re always gonna be ready and when it’s our time to shine, we’re ready to take that opportunity and help the defense out.”
Talk of a NASCAR package that puts Barrett, Von Miller, Shane Ray and Bradley Chubb on the field at the same time is scintillating. During third-and-long situations, this potential package allows defensive coordinator Joe Woods to creatively blitz the quarterback and get the defense off the field.
“There’s gonna be three of us sometimes on a NASCAR package on third-and-long situations and stuff like that,” Barrett said. “We’re just ready, and if we do get all four of us, we can be ready for that, too.”
After disappointing in the first preseason game and allowing 42 points to the Minnesota Vikings, Barrett and the Broncos defense know they have much to improve upon. While recognizing that preseason games allow the team to make adjustments, Barrett also said that they need to do better than a 42-point outing, regardless of the implications of the game.
In preparation for the second preseason game against the Chicago Bears Saturday night, the two teams completed two days of joint practice this week. Having practiced against his teammates up to this point, Barrett enjoyed the combined practice.
“Going against new players is always good and showing off our new schemes against teams to see how they work is gonna be good for us as a defense. But personally, there’s not a difference. You always want to go out there and try your best and impose your will on the person you’re going against,” Barrett said.
