Denver’s Iron Man.
Simon Fletcher may never have made a Pro Bowl or earned an All-Pro nomination, but from 1988 to 1995, the Broncos’ outside linebacker started 128 out of a possible 128 games for Denver, accruing 97.5 sacks (most in franchise history) and 808 tackles (4th most in franchise history) during his career.
Without question, Fletcher is the most prolific pass rusher in Denver Broncos history — until Von Miller breaks his records, of course — and when he was inducted into the Denver Broncos Ring of Fame earlier this week, it was well deserved.
On Friday, Fletcher joined Eric Goodman, Les Shapiro and Tyler Polumbus on the Afternoon Drive to discuss the honor, and like John Lynch, Fletcher said he was shocked at the news.
“I was flabbergasted,” Fletcher said. “That’s the only word I can come up with, because it took me totally by surprise. I was speechless, and that’s unusual to me.”
And it’s been a long time coming. Two decades since he retired back in 1995, Fletcher probably should have received this honor years, if not decades, ago.
“The decision makers came to a point where they realized that I made a significant contribution, and they appreciated what I had done,” Fletcher said. “Every day I went to practice, it was my intent to live up to the expectation of ownership of fans, and particularly of my family and my teammates.”
