With the Denver Broncos set to kick off their season opener in the next 24 hours against the Seattle Seahawks, what are three matchups to watch for that will likely decide the outcome of the game?

Denver Broncos three matchups to watch for vs. Seattle Seahawks

Sunday’s game has high stakes for both the Denver Broncos and Seattle Seahawks, and it could go a multitude of ways, but for analysis sake, let’s highlight three matchups that will more than likely define the outcome this week.

Patrick Surtain II vs. DK Metcalf is must-see TV

These two faced off two seasons ago in Russell Wilson’s return to Seattle. While the Broncos lost the game, PS2 limited Metcalf from making any big plays, holding him to 36 yards on seven catches and very limited production. With the Broncos franchise cornerback now locked in for the long-term, this matchup between he and Metcalf makes for must-see TV.

Metcalf’s size and explosiveness present a challenge for most defensive backs, but Surtain is well-equipped to be the equalizer for what the Seattle wide receiver can do offensively. Surtain’s ability to keep everything in front of him and react while playing off-ball coverage and press coverage is something not many players can do against the size and speed of a player like Metcalf.

Courtland Sutton demands attention, Marvin Mims can capitalize

After hauling in ten touchdowns last season, Courtland Sutton returns as the Denver Broncos top producer at the receiver position and will likely command the attention of Tariq Woolen this Sunday. Not only will Woolen cover him, but it’s more than likely that a safety will play over the top, or the Seahawk’s defense will have some inside help to his side of the field.

If this plays out the way we think it could, it should allow Marvin Mims to capitalize with his speed across the middle of the field or in the yards-after-catch department. We didn’t get to see too much of Marvin in training camp or the preseason in a featured role the way head coach Sean Payton suggested he would this season, and it’s possible that Mims was hidden a bit and will be unleashed on Sunday.

Denver Broncos trench warfare will dictate the game

The Broncos’ offensive line returns intact for this upcoming season, with the only change being at center with Luke Wattenberg starting. Denver believes their offensive line is better than what was shown last season, and the run game will be a huge component of their offense. If the OL can spring free Javonte Williams, Jaleel McLaughlin, and Audric Estime consistently enough in the run game, they’ll have a great chance to win.

On the inverse, Denver’s defensive line on paper looks significantly improved in comparison to last year. With the addition of John Franklin-Myers, players like D.J. Jones and Zach Allen should see fewer double teams and outside pass rushers like Baron Browning and Jonathon Cooper should be able to play a little more freely. Kenneth Walker will be a big test for Denver, but with the defensive line and the backend depth of Malcolm Roach and Jordan Jackson rotating in, they should stay fresh in this department. If they can limit Walker on the ground, and Denver’s defense can get after Geno Smith, they’ll be in the best position to succeed and come away with a win.
