The University of Colorado and college football on the whole is remembering 1994 Heisman Trophy winner Rashaan Salaam in the wake of his death.
The Pac-12 Network compiled this short highlight reel of Salaam’s career at Colorado, including Larry Zimmer’s legendary call when Salaam went over 2,000 yards in 1994, and his time with the Chicago Bears.
Scott Rude of 120 Sports, who grew up a Chicago Bears fan in the Windy City, shared his memories – both highs and lows – of Salaam’s career.
BuffsTV posted these highlights of Salaam’s playing days in Boulder, including an extended version of the Zimmer call.
Salaam was found dead in a Boulder park on Monday night. His death is believed to be a suicide, Salaam’s mother told USA Today. He was 42.
While a junior at the University of Colorado, Salaam became only the fourth player in NCAA history to rush for 2,000 yards in a season. He was a landslide winner of the 1994 Heisman Trophy and his Colorado Buffaloes finished the season ranked No. 3 in the country. Their only loss was to eventual national champion Nebraska.
Salaam was drafted No. 21 overall by the Chicago Bears in 1995, the year he became the youngest player in NFL history to rush for 1,000 yards. He still holds that distinction. He was named the NFC Rookie of the Year in 1995.
