When the NFL free agency period opens on Wednesday, the Denver Broncos are expected to have a new starting quarterback.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Broncos have their man in former Minnesota Vikings quarterback Case Keenum, who is expected to sign a deal with the Broncos come Wednesday. No details on the terms of the contract have been reported.

The Broncos moved quickly to secure Keenum, which might be a sign that they were never in the Kirk Cousins sweepstakes as the clock ticked down, and Minnesota surpassed Denver as the clear leader for his services. The Broncos clearly wanted to ensure that they landed the consensus second-best quartreback available rather than be left holding the bag if they couldn’t land Cousins — which seemed increasingly likely.

The 30-year-old Keenum guided the Vikings to an 11-3 record in 14 regular season starts in 2017, completing 67% of his passes, while throwing 22 touchdowns and only seven interceptions.

Starting 38 games in his career, Keenum holds a career 61.9 completion percentage and has thrown 46 touchdowns and 27 interceptions. Keenum’s only two playoff games came last year, when the Vikings pulled off what many consider one of the greatest plays in playoff history: the ‘Minnesota Miracle.’

Keenum is no stranger to folks inside the Broncos’ front office, as he was signed as an undrafted free-agent by former Broncos head coach Gary Kubiak — now turned senior personnel adviser to the Broncos — back in 2012 when Kubiak coached the Houston Texans.
