With Denver Broncos training camp kicking off next week, everything is set with Bo Nix returning fully healthy and ready to go, while everybody keeps an eye on the backup quarterback battle.
Denver Broncos QB Bo Nix fully cleared and ready for training camp
When the Denver Broncos take the field on Tuesday of next week for the start of training camp, with veterans reporting, Bo Nix will be full go without limitations.
That’s the best news of the offseason. Thankfully, we’re heading into another training camp not having to worry about who the franchise quarterback is for this Broncos team, with Nix having answered that question.
Even with Nix set to be full go, don’t be surprised if the Broncos give him a day here or there throughout camp where he’s just a limited participant, meaning he does position drills and 7-on-7. Typically, Sean Payton has given players who are coming off major injuries some sprinkled-in pull-back days.
It wouldn’t surprise me if Nix practices five straight days fully, then has a day where he’s limited. If that does take place, don’t be concerned.
With Davis Webb taking over playcalling duties, he and Bo’s process together will be important throughout camp, and getting chemistry built with Jaylen Waddle, the receivers, and the tight ends is going to be crucial.
Nix has put in a ton of work this offseason, especially after OTAs and minicamp, by training in the summer heat of Alabama.
With Bo fully back in the mix, the Broncos will enter the season with high expectations that the team feels they’ll match because of who they have under center.
Broncos backup QB battle will be worth watching
During the NFL Annual Meeting, Broncos head coach Sean Payton said that there was competition for the backup QB job last season and that he views it the same coming into this season, with nothing being etched in stone.
They like Jarrett Stidham and Sam Ehlinger. Stidham is the longest-tenured QB on the roster, while Ehlinger turned down opportunities to be on other teams’ 53-man rosters last season.
Davis Webb is the glue that keeps that room together. All three of them, and Bo Nix, are tight-knit in the meeting room and away from football. Competition between Stidham and Ehlinger will be under the microscope throughout the summer, as Denver likely keeps two quarterbacks on the active roster.
Ehlinger had a strong offseason showing, standing out during OTAs and minicamp, not hesitating to be aggressive or pull the trigger on downfield throws. He wasn’t afraid to take risks.
Stidham is steady. During the offseason program, he was consistent and took what the defense gave him and fired in some shots when and where he needed to, but he wasn’t as aggressive. That’s not a bad thing, but I’d like to see him take a few risks during practice, and that will be one thing I’m paying attention to when he and Ehlinger take the field.
