The Broncos find themselves in a dizzying tailspin, and the ground is coming up at them quickly.
If they are to salvage their season, they have to make numerous dramatic improvements, but according to their head coach, Vic Fangio, the most important improvement they have to make is in regard to their fundamentals.
“What’s most concerning is our fundamentals were lacking in that game, particularly on the defensive side of the ball,” Coach Fangio told the media on Friday. “When that’s lacking, that’s poor coaching on our part, and that’s starts with me. We have to do a better job of getting the fundamental things taught and executed.”
Those fundamentals will come down to discipline and the players improving their reading the play as it’s occuring.
“Not so much the assignments and lining up,” Fangio said when asked if missed assignments were the fundamentals lacking. “It’s being where you’re supposed to be at all times and being there for the different types of plays. If they run the stretch play, you’ve got to stay in your gap. If they run a boot play, you’ve got to be there for the boot. You’ve got to have good eyes and be disciplined when you play a team that’s good with the boot game, good with the screen game, and good with the play-action game. We didn’t get that done well enough.”
The Broncos now hold sole possession of last place in the division, and with numerous division games coming up, they’ll have to get those fundamentals back in order quickly if they don’t want the season to go up in smoke.
